- Have a valid (unexpired or expired not more than one year), government-issued photo ID with you. Examples include a driver's license, state ID, military ID, or passport. A digital id or a photocopy is not permitted.
- Don't have a valid government-issued photo ID because it was lost or stolen? No problem. We can do it another way:
- By a verification on oath or affirmation of a credible witness personally appearing before the notary and known to the notary
- or whom the notary can identify on the basis of a passport, driver's license, or government-issued nondriver identification card that is current or expired not more than one year before the performance of the notarial act.
- A personal appearance is required of the person executing the signature on a notarized document.
- Be sure the documents are complete and ready for signature. Do not sign or date your document before your appointment. If you need legal advice, please consult an attorney. The notary public is prohibited from helping you prepare, complete, or understand legal documents. If you need a referral to a local Greeley attorney, we've got one!
- Some documents may require signature witnesses in addition to notarization. We currently do not provide signature witnesses as a service.
I don't speak English. Can I use an interpreter?
- Yes. You may use an interpreter but the interpreter may not have a disqualifying interest in the notarization.
- The interpreter may NOT directly, or as a proximate result of the notarization, receive any advantage, right, title, interest, cash, or property exceeding in value the sum of any fee properly received; or
- Is a party to or is named in the document that is to be notarized.
Do interpreters need to be certified?
- No; unless, the interpreter is providing services for a member of the deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind community. In that case, the interpreter must hold either:
- a. A valid certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. or a successor entity; or
- b. A valid certification for sign language interpretation approved by the Colorado Commission for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deafblind.
